The Rural-Urban Building Innovation Lab investigates novel forms of building and fabrication methods by coupling digital construction technologies with natural and non-standardized material for the design of adaptable buildings and housing in rural-urban contexts. Leveraging computational protocols, digital fabrications, and technologies like augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) tools, RUBI Lab explores how local building practices can incorporate both traditional and innovative building materials and fabrication techniques to accommodate changing environments and lifestyles across the urban fringe and rural contexts. By studying regional behaviors from spatial transformation to material resources, the lab contextualizes design strategies to mass-customize housing needs unique to local communities and seeks to develop impactful ways to rethink future construction.
