The 2023 Preston H. Thomas Memorial Symposium Exhibition highlighted the work of leading creative experts around the world who explore the integration of regional material, technology, and spatial practices in the rural-urban territories of East and Southeast Asia. Curated around the touchstones of material, technology, and agency, the exhibition offered a dive into an expansive range of projects across geographical and cultural contexts. The images and large-scale drawings showcase specific construction details, material systems, and design innovations unique to each project's particular context. The interactive AR exhibition, which includes 3D-scanned models of material samples, building details and components, interior spaces, and landscapes, offered an immersive experience to view and interact with specific aspects of the exhibited work at full scale. The exhibition provided an interactive experience of works that challenge preconceived notions of the rural-urban binary and proposed exciting potentials for rethinking construction technologies, sustainability, and citizen agency in the built environment.
