Study of the Effect of Building Materials in Homes on Subjective Well-being
Colors, tones, textures, and materials have been shown to directly influence human behavior and response towards the environment. Considering that people in the U.S. spend about 62% of their waking time at home, it is important that we better understand these relationships in order to design residential interiors that support well-being and health. This research examines the relationship between interior finishing materials in homes, their environmental and physical performance, and subjective well-being. It uses an image survey to assess levels of comfort, energy, calmness, and productivity for 150 different interior scenes and Photovoice, a qualitative research method that gathers participant-taken photographs and narratives to translate their experience into actionable knowledge.
