Najeh Abduljalil

DIRECTOR OF CORNELL UNIVERSITY RESEARCH TO ACTION-YOUTH; COLLABORATING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER

Najeh, born and raised in Reno, Nevada, is a third-year Urban and Regional Studies major at Cornell University. He began a career in urban justice as a youth researcher for the AmeriCorps-sponsored group Research for Change Nevada (R4CNV). At R4CNV, he worked with 15 fellow income-qualified, first-generation high school students to conduct a community needs assessment and take action on local issues such as the lack of development in Reno’s low-income neighborhoods.

After a year at R4CNV, Najeh was promoted to lead researcher. As a research lead, Najeh shared skills with new cycles of youth researchers, such as data collection, civic engagement, and organizing social actions. Najeh’s team in Nevada advocated for traffic safety infrastructure in a neglected low-income neighborhood with a history of pedestrian accidents. His team also explored strategies to support Reno’s homeless population during the city’s deadly winters.
Research for Change NV fostered Najeh’s passion for service and inspired him to start a similar program named Cornell University Research-to-Action Youth (CURTA-Y). Najeh aims to involve Central New York youth in the building deconstruction, preservation, and reuse movement by bringing together a team of youth researchers to conduct a community needs assessment and advocate for sustainable policies.

In his free time Najeh enjoys photography, running, and hiking.
